The Watch – Movie Review By Adam Sirdoreus

The Watch is a film I’ve been looking forward to seeing for a while now, mainly just because of everyone that was behind it. Akiva Schaffer directed this and he also made Hot Rod , which is a very underrated comedy. The writers are made up of Evan Goldberg and, yes, Seth Rogen. The cast includes Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, Vince Vaughn, Richard Ayoade, and Will Forte.

My first comment on the film is that I think it deserves a way higher rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is currently sitting at a 16%. While it isn’t quite the comedy I was looking for, considering all the people that were behind it. I still thought the film was consistently funny from beginning to end, and even the Sci-Fi side of the story was solid. It had a good mix of action, sci-fi, and humor.

Everyone here is good. Ben Stiller is a solid lead, Vince Vaughn is better than he usually is. I like the guy, but he just seemed to have a different role here than he usually does. Will Forte plays this suspicious cop, and he is really funny in the role. He has one of the funniest scenes in the film. Easily, hands down, the two people that steal the show are Jonah Hill and Richard Ayoade. They have the best laughs throughout and are the most energetic in the film.

One other thing that surprised me a lot about the film are the visuals .The visuals here are surprisingly really good. These weren’t just generic aliens, you can tell that the people behind the visuals did put some effort into making these aliens somewhat unique than aliens that we have seen in other films. Even the action in the film, towards the third act, was done quite well and was pretty awesome. I won’t lie about that.

As for flaws with the film, yes there is plenty to nitpick at. Ben Stiller and Rosemary DeWitt have a side story about not being able to have kids and it felt really out of place and unneeded. It does sort of get off to a slow start, and even then the film goes on longer than it should. My main problem with it are the twists in the film, one specifically at the end does seem a bit out of place, as if the writers just wrote it in halfway through production.

But despite some flaws that I had with the film, It is a very funny comedy that I would recommend to anyone who is a fan of this type of humor, or even a fan of one of the actors in the film. They all have a chance to shine and the film is just really fun and entertaining. I enjoyed my self a lot during The Watch.

So, I’m going to give it a mild B+ rating.
